Mufflers on Longtail Boats

A couple of years ago, there was a campaign to have long-tail boats at Koh Phi Phi fitted with exhaust mufflers. The idea was to quiet them down to a “swoosh” instead of the customary loud dragster noise. What happened?

George Foose, Bangkok. Monday, April 23, 2001  4:15:24 AM
“The Krabi Harbor Master issued a notice reminding boat owners that the law requires noise pollution from boats to be under 100 decibels. The notice advised the owners of the long-tail boats at Koh Phi Phi to fit mufflers on their exhaust pipes to make them quieter. However, even though this is the law, most of the long-tail boat owners have ignored it.
If, while on patrol, the Krabi Marine Police or the Krabi Harbor Master come across a long-tail boat without a muffler fitted, the boat owner will be arrested and fined between 500 and 1,000 baht.”
